Starting from the academic year 2016-2017, prospective students should apply for admission to the Indonesian Literature Study Programme undergraduate program Universitas Andalas through three types of university admission as applied to all state university in Indonesia. The first type is called SNMPTN where high school students are evaluated based on their three-year academic performance in school. The second is called SBMPTN, an Indonesian national exam for university entrance. Both admission processes are organized by a National Committee of each admission process (National Committee for SNMPTN and National Committee for SBMPTN), which is formed by the Assembly Rectors of Public Institutes and Universities of Indonesia (MRPTNI). The last type is conducted through an exam held by a group of universities in which Andalas University is one of its members called as SMMPTN.
